Düsseldorf (GER)

Skipped the philosophy lessons? Text too long, too many letters? Thinking is too exhausting? Then try Richard, he is (almost) always right.

Richard David Precht, born in 1964, is a philosopher, journalist and author and one of the most distinguished intellectuals in German-speaking countries. He is Honorary Professor of Philosophy at Leuphana University Lüneburg and Honorary Professor of Philosophy and Aesthetics at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin. His books such as “Wer bin ich – und wenn ja, wie viele?” (“Who am I – and if so how many?”), “Liebe – ein unordentliches Gefühl” (“Love – a messy feeling”) and “Die Kunst, kein Egoist zu sein” (“The art of not being an egotist”) are international bestsellers and have been translated into more than 40 languages. Most recently “Erkenne dich selbst” (“Know thyself”), “Erkenne die Welt” (“Know the world”) and “Tiere denken” (“Animals think”) were published. In his current book “Jäger, Hirten, Kritiker. Eine Utopie für die digitale Gesellschaft” (“Hunters, shepherds, critics. A Utopia for the Digital Society”) (Goldmann Verlag) he outlines the picture of a desirable future in the digital age. Since 2012, he is also presenting the philosophy program »Precht« on ZDF.

Take-away:

“In the working world of the future, few people will tell computers what they are supposed to do, but more and more people will be doing what computers are telling them to do. What does that mean for our economy, our labor market and the social cohesion in our society?”
